One-to-one tuition for families across Greater Manchester, including preparation for the Trafford Grammar Schools Consortium test — the route into the area's selective schools.
Most of Greater Manchester is comprehensive. The significant exception is Trafford, where a group of grammar schools forms a consortium and shares a single entrance test — so a child applying to several of them sits the exam once rather than repeatedly.
That test is set by GL Assessment and runs as two papers of roughly an hour each, covering maths, verbal reasoning and non-verbal reasoning. Note what is not on that list: unlike Birmingham's test, there is no separate English comprehension paper. It is a genuinely different exam and preparing for the wrong one wastes a year.
A tutor working through a national 11+ workbook will spend a large share of the time on English comprehension, which carries no marks on the Trafford papers, and correspondingly less on the non-verbal reasoning that does. Tell us your target schools and the preparation is weighted to the test your child is actually sitting.
For most Manchester families the realistic priorities are KS2 SATs, a confident start to Year 7, and then GCSE. That is the bulk of what we do here, and it is where an hour a week compounds furthest.
A simplified overview. Selective-school arrangements change from year to year. Always confirm the current registration window, test date and format directly with the school or local authority before relying on them.
| Element | Detail | What we do about it |
|---|---|---|
| Who it covers | A consortium of grammar schools in the Trafford area of Greater Manchester | One test covers the consortium, so preparation is not split across competing formats |
| Format | Two papers of approximately one hour each, set by GL Assessment | Timed full papers in that format well before test day |
| Content | Maths, verbal reasoning and non-verbal reasoning | Weighted accordingly — notably, no separate English comprehension paper to prepare for |
| Sat once | A single sitting is considered by every consortium school on your application | One peak to plan towards rather than a series of separate exams |
| Outside Trafford | Greater Manchester is otherwise largely comprehensive | Focus moves to KS2 SATs, the Year 7 transition and GCSE preparation |
Maths, verbal and non-verbal reasoning — weighted to the actual papers rather than a generic national 11+ workbook.
