Free GCSE Statistics and Probability Test

Ten questions on averages, probability and charts: some of the most accessible marks on any GCSE maths paper.

1. What is the mode of 2, 3, 3, 5, 7?

Answer: The mode is the most common value: 3 appears twice.

2. What is the median of 4, 1, 7, 3, 9?

Answer: Put them in order (1, 3, 4, 7, 9); the middle value is 4.

3. What is the range of 12, 5, 9, 20?

Answer: Range = largest − smallest = 20 − 5 = 15.

4. The probability that it rains tomorrow is 0.3. What is the probability that it does not rain?

Answer: Probabilities of all outcomes add to 1: 1 − 0.3 = 0.7.

5. Two fair coins are flipped. What is the probability of two heads?

Answer: Outcomes HH, HT, TH, TT are equally likely; one is HH: 1/4 (or ½ × ½).

6. What is the mean of 5, 10 and 15?

Answer: (5 + 10 + 15) ÷ 3 = 30 ÷ 3 = 10.

7. A bag holds 3 red and 5 blue counters. One is picked at random. What is the probability it is red?

Answer: There are 8 counters and 3 are red: 3/8.

8. A fair dice is rolled 60 times. How many 6s would you expect?

Answer: Expected = probability × trials = 1/6 × 60 = 10.

9. In a pie chart, what angle represents 25%?

Answer: 25% of 360° = 90°.

10. As one variable increases, the other decreases. What type of correlation is this?

Answer: When one goes up as the other goes down, the correlation is negative.

About this test

Statistics and probability questions are often the quickest marks to secure, because they rely on clear methods rather than long algebra. Knowing which average to use, and why, is half the battle.
