Free KS2 Maths Reasoning Practice Test

Word problems like the SATs reasoning papers: money, time, shape, place value and averages. Every answer comes with the working.

1. A book costs £4.50. How much do 3 books cost?

Answer: £4.50 × 3: £4 × 3 = £12 and 50p × 3 = £1.50, so £13.50.

2. Sam shares 48 sweets equally between 6 friends. How many does each friend get?

Answer: 48 ÷ 6 = 8, because 6 × 8 = 48.

3. What is 3.6 rounded to the nearest whole number?

Answer: The tenths digit is 6, which is 5 or more, so round up to 4.

4. A rectangle is 8 cm long and 5 cm wide. What is its perimeter?

Answer: Add all four sides: 8 + 5 + 8 + 5 = 26 cm.

5. What is the area of the same 8 cm by 5 cm rectangle?

Answer: Area = length × width = 8 × 5 = 40 cm².

6. It is 3:45 pm. What time will it be in 50 minutes?

Answer: 15 minutes takes you to 4:00 pm; the remaining 35 minutes gives 4:35 pm.

7. Which number is a multiple of both 4 and 6?

Answer: 12 = 4 × 3 and 12 = 6 × 2, so 12 is a common multiple (in fact the lowest one).

8. What is the value of the digit 7 in 4,732?

Answer: The 7 is in the hundreds column, so it is worth 700.

9. The temperature is −3°C. It rises by 8°C. What is the new temperature?

Answer: Count up from −3: 3 steps reach 0, 5 more reach 5°C.

10. What is the mean of 4, 6 and 8?

Answer: Add them (4 + 6 + 8 = 18) and divide by how many there are (3): 18 ÷ 3 = 6.

About this test

The two KS2 reasoning papers test whether a child can choose the right calculation, not just carry it out. Reading the question carefully and writing down each step is what turns a near-miss into a mark.
