Greek roots: tele, micro, phon, bio, graph, geo and therm
Many English science words are built from Greek roots. The root carries the main meaning, and the rest of the word adds more. Because the root is spelled the same way in every word, you can use it to spell new words. For example, tele means far, and it appears in telephone and television.
| Greek root | Meaning | Example words |
|---|---|---|
| tele | far | telephone, telescope, television |
| micro | small | microscope, microphone |
| phon | sound | telephone, phonics, microphone, symphony |
| bio | life | biology, biography |
| graph | write, or draw | autograph, biography, graphic |
| geo | earth | geography, geometry |
| therm | heat | thermometer, thermal |
Key ideas

Where words come from: etymology
Etymology is the history of a word. English has borrowed words from many languages: Old English is the base; Old Norse came with the Vikings; Old French came with the Normans; and Latin and Greek provide many scientific and academic words. A word's history often explains its spelling and its meaning.
Passage: where words come from (original)
Many everyday words have surprising histories. The word window came into English from Old Norse, the language of the Vikings, and it is related to vindauga, meaning wind eye. Meat has a split history: the animals kept their English names, such as cow and sheep, but the meat was named in French, as in beef and pork, after the Norman rulers had spoken French at court. A good dictionary gives the origin of a word, so that a reader can see why it is spelled as it is.
| Word | Origin | Where the word came from |
|---|---|---|
| window | Old Norse | vindauga, meaning wind eye |
| sky | Old Norse | sky, meaning cloud |
| beef | Old French | boef, the name of the meat, brought by the Normans |
| pork | Old French | porc, the name of the meat, brought by the Normans |
| crime | Latin | crimen, meaning charge or offence |
| democracy | Greek | demos (people) and kratos (power) |
| telephone | Greek | tele (far) and phone (sound) |
| hippopotamus | Greek | hippos (horse) and potamos (river), meaning river horse |
| bread | Old English | brēad, the everyday word that was kept |
