Exercise P Do you remember?
Non-calculatorMethod. Multiplication comes before addition.
- Multiply first. Multiplication is done before addition.2 × 6 = 12
- Add. Add 1 to the answer.12 + 1 = 13
Check. 13 − 1 = 12, and 12 ÷ 2 = 6. ✓
Watch out. Do not add 6 and 1 first.
Method. Ask what number, multiplied by 3, gives 12. Division undoes multiplication.
- Undo the multiplication. Divide 12 by 3 to undo multiplying by 3.12 ÷ 3 = 4
- Check. Multiply the answer by 3.4 × 3 = 12
Check. 4 × 3 = 12. ✓
Watch out. Undo the operation with its inverse: multiplication is undone by division.
Method. Subtraction undoes addition.
- Undo the addition. Take 8 away from 15.15 − 8 = 7
- Check. Add 8 to the answer.7 + 8 = 15
Check. 7 + 8 = 15. ✓
Watch out. The inverse of adding 8 is taking away 8.
Method. Work out the bracket first, then multiply by 3.
- Work out the bracket. Brackets come first.2 + 4 = 6
- Multiply. Multiply 6 by 3.3 × 6 = 18
Check. 18 ÷ 3 = 6. ✓
Watch out. Multiplying 3 by 2 and adding 4 gives 10, which is wrong here.
Method. Divide first, then add.
- Divide first. Division comes before addition.20 ÷ 4 = 5
- Add. Add 1.5 + 1 = 6
Check. 6 − 1 = 5, and 5 × 4 = 20. ✓
Watch out. Do not add 4 and 1 first.
One-step and two-step equations
An equation has an equals sign, with the same value on each side. To solve it, do the same thing to both sides until the letter is on its own. Use the inverse (opposite) operation: subtraction undoes addition, and division undoes multiplication.
Key ideas
- Do the same to both sides to keep the equation balanced.
- Addition is undone by subtraction; multiplication by division.
- For two steps, undo the adding or subtracting first, then the multiplying or dividing.
- Check your solution by putting it back into the original equation.
Method. Do the same to both sides of the equation, so that it stays balanced, until the letter is on its own.
- Write the equation. This is the equation we need to solve.x + 15 = 40
- Subtract 15 from both sides. This removes the number on the left, so the letter term is on its own.x = 25
- The letter already has no number in front, so the value is found. Read off the value.x = 25
- Write the answer. Check it by putting the value back into the original equation.x = 25
Check. Put x = 25 into the original equation: both sides give the same value. ✓
Watch out. Do the same to both sides. Doing it to one side only changes the equation.
Method. Do the same to both sides of the equation, so that it stays balanced, until the letter is on its own.
- Write the equation. This is the equation we need to solve.3x − 5 = 16
- Add 5 to both sides. This removes the number on the left, so the letter term is on its own.3x = 21
- Divide both sides by 3. This leaves the letter on its own.x = 7
- Write the answer. Check it by putting the value back into the original equation.x = 7
Check. Put x = 7 into the original equation: both sides give the same value. ✓
Watch out. Do the same to both sides. Doing it to one side only changes the equation.

- Write the equation. This is the equation we need to solve.x/4 = 6
- Multiply both sides by 4. This undoes the division by 4.x = 6 × 4
- Work out the right-hand side. Multiply 6 by 4.x = 24
- Write the answer. Check it by putting the value back into the original equation.x = 24
Check. Put x = 24 into the original equation: both sides give the same value. ✓
Watch out. Do the same to both sides. Doing it to one side only changes the equation.
Watch out
Watch out: in 2x + 5 = 17, subtract 5 first (2x = 12), then divide by 2 (x = 6). Do not divide by 2 first.
Exam tip
Grown-up tip. Ask the pupil to say what the inverse of each operation is, before they start. The order is always the reverse of the way the equation was built.

Brackets and fractions in equations
For brackets, expand first: 3(x + 4) = 3x + 12. For a fraction, multiply both sides by the bottom number: if (x + 3)/2 = 5, then x + 3 = 10.

Method. Test the rearranged formula with a value of y that gives a known x.
- Find x when y = 7. Take x = 1: 3 × 1 + 4 = 7, so y = 7 and x = 1.x = 1
- Test Sam's formula. Sam says x = (7 + 4)/3.(7 + 4)/3 = 11/3
- Compare. 11/3 is not 1, so Sam is wrong.Sam is not right
Check. The correct formula gives (7 − 4)/3 = 1. ✓
Watch out. Sam added 4 instead of subtracting it.

Exercise 6Z Check-up
Non-calculatorMethod. Do the same to both sides of the equation, so that it stays balanced, until the letter is on its own.
- Write the equation. This is the equation we need to solve.x − 6 = 10
- Add 6 to both sides. This removes the number on the left, so the letter term is on its own.x = 16
- The letter already has no number in front, so the value is found. Read off the value.x = 16
- Write the answer. Check it by putting the value back into the original equation.x = 16
Check. Put x = 16 into the original equation: both sides give the same value. ✓
Watch out. Do the same to both sides. Doing it to one side only changes the equation.
